FAQ
Quick answers to common questions about the Box Generator.
Are the dimensions inside or outside the box?
Outside. Width, length and height are the overall size of the assembled box. The usable space inside is smaller by the wall thickness on each side — so about two material thicknesses less in width and length. See Size & units.
My finger joints are too tight / too loose. Why?
Almost always the material thickness doesn't match your real sheet. Measure your sheet with calipers and enter the exact value as a custom thickness. Your laser's kerf also plays a part: the generator draws joints at nominal size without kerf compensation, so a wider kerf gives a looser fit. Cut a test corner and adjust before running a full sheet.
What file format do I get?
A ZIP of SVG files — a combined sheet with every panel laid out, plus one SVG per panel. SVG opens in every common laser program (LightBurn, xTool, Glowforge, Inkscape, and more). See Exporting & cutting.
My design imported at the wrong size. How do I fix it?
SVG files don't always carry units cleanly between programs. On import, choose millimeters if asked, then check that the overall width and length match what you set in the app. If they're off by a fixed ratio, scale the design to the correct total size — the panels stay correctly proportioned.
What are the gray labels on the sheet?
They're a reference layer — each panel's name and size, printed inside it — to help you keep track of the parts. They aren't cut lines. Hide, delete or "ignore" that layer before cutting; only the black lines should be cut.
Can I make a lid or dividers?
Not yet. The current version makes an open-top box (four walls and a bottom). Lids, dividers and lift-off tops are on the list for a future update.
Can I use a material that isn't in the list?
Yes. Pick Custom thickness and enter any value from 1 to 20 mm. The preview shows custom materials in a plain wood-like brown, but the cut files are the same regardless of how the preview looks.
How do I save or share a box?
Your design lives in the page's web address and updates as you edit. Use the Share button to copy the link, or bookmark the page. Opening the link later restores the exact box.
Do I need an account?
No. The Box Generator runs entirely in your browser — no account, no install, nothing uploaded.
